Apprenticeships provide a route into fishing for aspiring young men and women. Government funding is available for those aged between 16 and 24, but anyone of any age can undertake an apprenticeship, including those looking for a career change. Apprenticeships combine classroom training with on-the-job learning, giving trainees valuable experience and a nationally recognised qualification.
In England young people interested in a career in commercial fishing can undertake the Fisher Apprenticeship. Developed by the fishing industry, delivery of this 18-month qualification is about to be launched by South Devon College and the Cornwall College Group. There is also the option of the 12-month Diploma in Sea Fishing, which is offered by the Whitby & District Fishing Industry Training School.
In Scotland, they can undertake the Modern Apprenticeship in Maritime Occupations (Sea Fishing pathway). Developed by Seafish in partnership with the fishing industry and the Maritime Skills Alliance, this 12-24 month qualification is currently offered by Shetland UHI. There is also the option of the Trainee Deckhand course, which is offered by the Scottish Maritime Academy (part of North East Scotland College).
